"Troubadours and Courtly Love" - University of St. Thomas © 2003
This page is designed as a resource for scholars interested in medieval literary studies, specifically those studying the Harley lyrics from the 14th century. Our objective is to publish a semi-diplomatic electronic edition of a medieval poem with a controversial scribal history. Within the Harley manuscript 2253, our research team focused on the often-overlooked text, "A Wayle Whyt ase Whalles Bon," a 55-line poem written by an unknown author in the courtly love tradition in Middle English. In the menu above, you can explore our introduction to this controversy, then view for yourself three possible versions of the poem in circulation that we have collected. We intend to present all three versions of the poem in the original Middle English without giving preferential treatment to any version and have included several supplemental notes, resources, and a glossary of Middle English terms that may be useful as well. Enjoy the debate and decide for yourself which version, or versions, should be considered "authentic."
